Summer Sewing Club for children age 12+

This summer we will be running a series of workshops aimed at children who are just starting to use a sewing machine.

We have given a guide age of 12 but if you have a younger child who is keen and relatively competent on a machine please call us to discuss.

You can either book individual lessons at £25 per lesson or book all 4 for a discounted price of £85.

The four workshops are:
1. a mini tote bag
2. bunting
3. a twirly skirt
and
4. a headband with a hand sewn flower

Drawstring tote bag in Robert Kaufman "Quill" fabric

When this 'Quill' fabric by Valori Wells for Robert Kaufman arrived we couldn't decide what to make first!

I had been meaning to try a couple of different things, firstly a reversible summer scarf using 6 fat quarters

and secondly a tote bag with drawstring lining

We will be offering both the scarf and the tote bag as workshops so keep an eye on our schedule for forthcoming dates!

Freehand Machine Embroidery - Workshop 24th may

On Saturday 24th May the very talented Suzanne Leather from TeddyLongLegs is coming to teach a freehand machine embroidery workshop at Butterfly Bright.

We first spotted Suzanne's beautiful work at the Sherborne Artisan Market where both Caroline and I treated each other to a little brooch for our Christmas presents!

Workshops are suitable for complete beginners; you don’t even need to know how to thread a sewing machine up! You will cover all the basics and experiment with stitching, before creating a main piece based on either your own or one of Suzanne's designs.

All equipment and materials are included in the workshop cost along with refreshments.

Members of the Sherborne Sewing Bee Facebook group will be entitled to a special offer on this workshop, so why not join us today!

An alphabet mini quilt in Dashwood Studios 'Flurry' fabric

As soon as we took delivery of the new "Flurry" fabric range by Dashwood Studios I knew I had to find a
project to use them all together!

At about the same time we ordered an Alphabet Di cutter to use with our Accuquilt machine.

They were a match made in heaven and the idea for an alphabet quilt was born!

I appliqued all the letters onto the cream squares first and then played around with the other squares to get a nice even spread of colours.

It took a few weeks to put it all together, snatching the occasional evening to get my sewing machine out.
The finished quilt is about a metre squared so a little too small for a single bed, but it would be lovely on a cot bed.

This mini quilt will probably be used as a play mat, either indoors on in the garden

but actually I think it will take a bit of persuading to get it back from Daisy who seized possession of it as soon as she saw it!

We plan to sell the fabric pre cut for this quilt as a kit to make up yourself and we will also be running a four week workshop to help people who need a bit of guidance to make one.

Within a few minutes of posting a picture of this quilt on facebook I was asked if we sell them, sadly I don't have time to make any more as running and business and looking after three kids are my priority but I do enjoy the occasional sewing project and I hope it inspires people to try and make one themselves.

The kits are now available in our Folksy shop and the workshop is ready to book on our website
